\data\cauc\cezet
Proto-Tsezian: [*-cV]
Meaning: compar.
Tsezi: -ce
Proto-Tsezian: *cVḳʷV(~ -Ṽ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 abscess 2 pimple
Tsezi: caḳʷa 1
Ginukh: ceḳʷa 1
Khvarshi: ceḳʷa (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: ceḳʷa 2
Comments: PTsKh *cVḳʷa (vowel correspondences are irregular).
Proto-Tsezian: *cʷã
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: star
Tsezi: ca
Ginukh: cʷa
Khvarshi: ca
Inkhokvari: cã
Bezhta: cã
Gunzib: ca
Comments: PTsKh *cʷã; PGB *cã.
Proto-Tsezian: *cʷǝ̃ A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: name
Tsezi: ci
Ginukh: ce
Khvarshi: cã
Inkhokvari: cõ
Bezhta: caro
Gunzib: cɔ̃ru
Comments: The PTs paradigm: dir. *cʷǝ̃, obl. *cʷǝrV-. Cf. PTsKh *cǝ̃, *cǝRo- (reflected, e.g. in Tsez. ci, ciro-), PGB *cɔ̃, *cɔrV- (reflected in Bezht. Khosh. cã, cãra- - although the nasalisation in the oblique base is here secondary). In Bezht. Tl. and Gunz. the oblique base has replaced the direct one. The vowel correlation PTsKh *ǝ : PGB *ɔ points unambiguosly to PTs *ǝ with a preceding labialization.
Proto-Tsezian: *-č
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 gerund 2 pres. part. 3 present
Inkhokvari: [tense+]-č 1
Bezhta: -ca / -ča (after consonants) 3; -ca-laʔ pres. gerund
Gunzib: -č 2
Proto-Tsezian: *čača-lu
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: sour
Bezhta: čäčälö (Khosh.)
Gunzib: čačalu (Gunz.)
Comments: PGB *čača-lu (cf. also Bezht. Tlad. čäčälö).
Proto-Tsezian: *čãχ:- ( ~ -ʁ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to write
Bezhta: čaχ- (Tlad.)
Gunzib: čãχ-
Comments: PGB *čãχ-.
Proto-Tsezian: *če (?)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: stallion; male
Tsezi: gulu-či
Comments: The root is attested only in Tsez., in a compound with gulu 'horse, stallion'. It may be a remnant of the EC root for 'horse'; however, it may also be a borrowed morpheme with the meaning 'man' ( < Av. či).
Proto-Tsezian: *čič-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to plait, wattle
Gunzib: čič-
Comments: Attested only in Gunz., but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Tsezian: *čiḳe A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: kid
Khvarshi: čiḳi
Inkhokvari: čiḳe
Bezhta: čiḳe
Gunzib: čiḳe
Comments: PTsKh *čiḳe; PGB *čiḳe (cf. also Bezht. Khosh. ciḳe).
Proto-Tsezian: *čo A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 long hair 2 mane 3 hair in horse's tail
Ginukh: čud 1
Khvarshi: čoda 1
Inkhokvari: ču 2
Bezhta: čoj 3
Comments: A rather complicated case. The PTs paradigm must have looked like *čo, *čorV-; the direct base is preserved in Inkh. ču (PTsKh *ču), and the oblique one (having passed to direct) - in Bezht. čoj (PGB *čorV). The Gin. and Khvarsh. forms are results of contaminating this root (PTsKh *ču) with PTsKh *kɔdV 'long hair' q.v.
Proto-Tsezian: *č[o]ʁ:-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to fade, wither
Tsezi: čaʁI-iʎ- (Radzhibov)
Gunzib: čoʁ-
Proto-Tsezian: *čɔƛ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to rinse
Tsezi: čokƛ-
Khvarshi: čokƛ- (Radzhibov)
Comments: PTsKh *čokƛ-; it is interesting to note the coincidence between Tsez. č- and Lezgian forms in *č:-, but the combination -kƛ- is not quite clear (*čɔkƛ- < *čɔƛ-k-, with a secondary reanalysis of *-ƛ- as a verbal suffix?). Cf. perhaps also PGB *č̣aƛ- 'to pour out, scatter' (Bezht. Tlad., Khosh. č̣äƛ-, Gunz. č̣aƛ-) ?
Proto-Tsezian: *čuriƛ̣ / *čuriṭ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: whip
Tsezi: čuruṭ
Ginukh: čuruƛ̣
Khvarshi: čuriṭ
Bezhta: čuruƛ̣
Gunzib: čuruƛ̣
Comments: PTsKh *čuriƛ̣ / *čuriṭ (cf. also Tsez. /Bokarev/ čureṭ, /Imnaishvili/ čureṭ, čuruṭ); PGB *čuruƛ̣ / *čuruṭ (cf. also Bezht. Tlad. čuruṭ, Khosh. čürüƛ̣).
Proto-Tsezian: *čuχ:-ro ( ~ -ʁ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: wooden gutter, kennel (on the roof)
Bezhta: čüχrö (Khosh.)
Comments: Isolated in Bezht. (cf. also Tlad. čüχüṭrö id. < *čuχ:Vr-ṭo with a productive dental suffix), but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Tsezian: *c̣aʔ(a)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 bow
Tsezi: c̣eru-c̣a
Ginukh: c̣eru-c̣a
Bezhta: c̣aʔa (Tlad.)
Gunzib: c̣aʔa
Comments: PTsKh *c̣ɨRu-c̣a ( ~ *c̣üRu-); PGB *c̣aʔa (cf. also Bezht. Khosh. c̣aʔ). In the PTsKh compound (which has an exact match in PGB: *c̣ulu-c̣aʔa > Bezht. c̣uluc̣a, Gunz. Nakh. c̣uluc̣aʔa 'bow') the first component goes back to PTs *c̣ulu B 'arrow' q.v.
Proto-Tsezian: *c̣aʁ:a (~-ʁ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: shoulder
Inkhokvari: c̣aʁa
Comments: Isolated in Inkh., but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Tsezian: *c̣api
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: a metallic breast ornament
Bezhta: c̣api
Gunzib: c̣api
Comments: PGB *c̣api.
Proto-Tsezian: *c̣ẽ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 bow 2 arrow
Ginukh: nic̣u 2
Inkhokvari: c̣ẽ 1
Comments: PTsKh *c̣ẽ, obl. *c̣eno- (Inkh. c̣eno-); Gin. nic̣u reflects a metathesised oblique stem (coincidence with nic̣u 'reed' is obviously secondary, because the latter is borrowed from Av. nuc̣:i q.v.).
Proto-Tsezian: *c̣ǝ A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: fire
Tsezi: c̣i
Ginukh: č̣e
Khvarshi: c̣a
Inkhokvari: c̣o
Bezhta: c̣o
Gunzib: c̣ǝ
Comments: PTsKh *c̣ǝ, PGB *c̣ǝ.
